I have been working around fairy tales for almost a year now. At this point in my life, I have a bitter-sweet relationship towards them. As a child, like many people, I have loved these stories. They were a huge part of my growing up, thanks to Disney. But my sentiments have greatly changed in a very short time.
My practice involves deconstructing stories and then relating that narrative to real life. The kind of picture these stories portray is horrendous. The moral of every story from my perspective was that for the eternal happiness you have to be beautiful. Your happiness is kept from you until you transform into a swan.
But the thing that i question is, what if I never turn into a swan? What if, being the ugly duckling is my reality?
